UK Immigration on a PR Visa
UK Immigration concerning a Permanent Resident (PR) Visa pertains to the procedure for individuals aiming to reside, work, and establish themselves in the United Kingdom indefinitely. In the UK, the term “Permanent Residency” is commonly referred to as Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Upon receiving ILR, an
individual is permitted to live in the UK without any limitations on duration. The pathway to obtaining ILR may differ based on the specific visa category held and the duration of the individual’s stay in the country.
What is Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
ILR is the UK’s version of permanent residency. It grants individuals the right to live and work in the UK indefinitely, without the need to renew visas. It also opens the door to applying for British citizenship
after a certain period.
Once you have ILR, you can
- Live and work in the UK without restrictions.
- Access public services such as healthcare (NHS) and welfare benefits.
- Travel in and out of the UK without needing a visa.
- Sponsor family members for immigration to the UK.
Eligibility for ILR (Permanent Residency)
- You must have lived in the UK legally for a continuous period of 5 years (for most visa categories). This period is reduced for certain visas like the Tier 1 (Investor) or Tier 2 (General) work visa, where it may be possible to apply after 2 or 3 years.
- Some individuals, such as those on a spouse visa or partner visa, may only need to be in the UK for 2-5 years, depending on their specific circumstances.
- You should not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period during the qualifying period.
Visa Type: To qualify for ILR, you generally need to have held a visa that leads to permanent residency

- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) – For skilled trade workers.
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC) – For those with Canadian work experience.
English Language Proficiency
- Applicants must prove their English language proficiency through an approved English language test, unless they are from an English-speaking country or have already passed an English language test as part of a previous visa application.
- For most people, the requirement is a level B1 (Intermediate) on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Benefits of ILR (Permanent Residency)
